How does the mitochondria look like?
The main components of the mitochondria are: the cristae, matrix, inner membrane and outer membrane. The cristae is essentially the folded inner membrane of the mitochondria. Inside the cristae, there is a part called the "matrix". The matrix is a fluid inside the mitochondria. The fluid contains water (H2O) and proteins. The cristae slightly increases the inner membranes surface area and it is the cristaes job to combine food (sugar) with oxygen to produce ATP. The last component in the mitochondria is the outer membrane, this is the covering of the cell or in other words it encloses the entire organelle.
What kind of cell is it found in, plant or animal?
These mitochondria organelles are not just found in one of these cells, it is found in both of them! The only difference between the mitochondria in the plant cell and the animal cell is that, the animal cell needs more energy than plant cells because plant cells use the process of photosynthesis. The photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts and it is only found in the plant cell. Also, because animal cells need more energy, the animal cell has more mitochondria organelles than the plant cell. To be specific, the animal cell has around 50-100 mitochondria organelles per cell, and the plant cell has around 2-10 mitochondria organelles per cell.
